The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Program (LExS) is open to outstanding non-EEA and non-EFTA students enrolling in a full-time Master’s program at Leiden University.

Field of study
All full-time Master’s programs at Leiden University with the exception of LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs at Leiden Law School.
Number of Awards
The number and type of scholarship award depends on the budget available for each department of the Faculty.

Scholarship value and duration
- € 10.000 of the tuition fee
- € 15.000 of the tuition fee
- Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee.
The LExS is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA LExS recipients must still submit “proof of sufficient funds” for their student visa / residence permit application.
Students must have achieved excellent study results in their previous education, this is relevant to the master’s program for which they are applying. As an indication, the student is among the top 10% of graduates from their previous study program. Note: no proof of classification is required; This information is purely to indicate the level of competitiveness.
Applicants are required to have a non-EEA / EFTA passport * and may not be eligible to receive support under the Dutch system of scholarships and study loans (Studiefinanciering), with the exception of students applying for the programs of Advanced LLM studies or Master’s in International Relations and Diplomacy, for which no nationality restrictions apply.
You must first apply online for admission to a master’s program at the University of Leiden. In your application you must clearly indicate that you would like to apply for the LExS scholarship in the scholarships section and upload your motivation letter for the LExS scholarship.
The deadline for programs that start in September is February 1 (exception – Advanced LLM: March 1), while programs that start in February have an October 1 deadline.
